A fusion of classical ballet and African drumming is not something you come across every day, but when Drum Cafe Joburg partnered with The South African Ballet Theatre, the outcome was truly magical.
Between 10 and 12 February 2012, Drum Cafe performed with The South African Ballet Theatre at the Royal Opera House in Muscat (ROHM), Oman, where they shared the spotlight with performers from Buenos Aires, Japan, Budapest, Prague, Vienna and beyond.
Balletomania is a mixed bill production including items such as ‘Amakhono Khono’ (Versatility), composed by Warren Lieberman and choreographed by Sharon Glover; ‘Kopano’, choreographed by Kaloyan Boyadjiev, as well as excerpts from the classical repertoire such as pas de deux from ‘Swan Lake’ and ‘Le Corsaire’.
According to SABT’s Interim Managing Director, James Campbell, “This invitation to perform at the ROHM was a great honor, not only for SABT (and Drum Cafe), but for the country – as it marks the first time that a South African ballet company has been invited to perform in Muscat.”
