The Drum Cafe was elected runner up in the category Sponsorship by a Small Business in the Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) Awards of 2009 for its sponsorship of The Mzantsi Traditional Orchestra.

BASA’s mission is to ensure the relevance and sustainability of the arts in South Africa by providing expertise in developing partnerships between business and the arts. The nominees list spans the broad spectrum of the arts – from visual arts projects to theatre, music and social awareness initiatives.

The Drum Cafe is a sponsor of the Mzantsi Traditional Orchestra, the intention behind the Orchestra is to bring together traditional instruments, songs and dance and to promote and preserve indigenous South African music in all its diversity and help create awareness of the vital importance of culture.

The Orchestra presents beautiful traditional songs and compositions, and has performed with South Africa’s top choir: Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society. The Orchestra showcases the voices of ancient instruments – the mbira, marimba, lesiba, uhadi, Pedi pipes, kudu horns and akadinda, in a performance that is powerful, moving and educational.

BASA CEO Michelle Constant said of the nominations “We’re absolutely thrilled at the nominations list which reflects just how effectively business and the arts can come together in a way that benefits both – along with South African society as a whole.”
