- IBM over 50 team buildings worldwide.
- BMW 360 degrees training: Sales Staff, Dealership owners, Marketing departments, Factory workers, Customer Service teams etc.
- Microsoft Tech-ed, Amsterdam. 6000 people, June 2004
This unifying experience creates the perfect platform for teams to experience the power of all working together to achieve a common objective.
The team building program is designed to:
- Break down barriers to create a more open organization.
- Align to a common goal, mission or vision.
- Improve Communications through accurate feedback.
- Accelerate Productivity by motivating staff and getting them to listen to each other.
Team building has never been so effective! Each individual brings their unique sound into the mix to create a one-of-kind percussive orchestra-one that wouldn’t be the same without the people who are taking part. This is truly a case of unity through diversity.
First, we break down barriers, level the playing field, with an opening of non-verbal communication. Music is a universal language, that allows us in a universal way to break down barriers and transcend the difference among us as humans and individuals. In Africa and in many other cultures around the world, drumming has been used for centuries to bring people together.
Second, we align everyone to a common theme through the bass note, the foundation of the music. In every organization, before true success can be realized, there needs to be alignment or some sort. This alignment could be to the vision, mission or values of an organization. We use the power of the bass note, the alignment of the music, as the metaphor for demonstrating the power of alignment with in the group.
Third, We close off with an interactive high energy percussion set, embracing diversity handing out fun percussive instruments, in an all out celebration of self expression and leadership. This is where we take the drumming skills that we have learned in the beginning to create music. A celebration of diversity, contribution, team building and leadership. We explore the diversity, in each and everyone’s unique and individual contribution through the tone note. Through call and response we teach the importance of communicating better by accurate feedback.
This is also a great lesson in leadership. Leadership is about knowing when to play and not to play. When it is time to take a solo or when it s time to support your piers. Through the rhythm, your organization will discover that the whole is greater than the sum of all its individual parts.

Interactive Gumboot Teambuilding
The Drum Cafe Gumboot Interactive Sessions are a great way to unleash energy at any event.
Gumboot dance originated in the mines and has become a popular dance form in the South African scene. Drum Cafe uses gumboots to break down barriers and build group synergy in a fun filled session.
For our interactive sessions we provide each person with a pair of gumboots and our team of expert facilitators teach you the basics of Gumboot dance. Starting with simple stamping rhythms we add claps and boot slaps and steadily build up an energetic sequence so that before you know it, the group will be dancing, clapping, singing and stomping together.
Interactive Boomwhacker Teambuilding
Boomwhackers are brightly coloured plastic tubes that are tuned by length to musical notes. A great way to expand your musicality, boom-whackers are a wonderful follow-on from drumming as they introduce melody. When hit on the hand, each colour boom-whacker produces a different tone, with five different tones in total. We split the group up according to colour of boom-whacker, and within a few minutes, the group will be making music together.
What happens on the day?
To begin, the facilitators split the participants up into colour groups, and then give each group a different rhythm to play. These intertwining rhythms come together to produce a melodious musical composition and the group is taught to make music as one. Before you know it, your group will be making music together, resulting in a strong feeling of unity and team building.
Benefits of Boomwhacking include:
- Colour and tone recognition

Basadi Le Maropa
The marimba (South African xylophone), one of Africa’s oldest instruments, combines powerful rhythms and harmonies with lyrical melodies and is perfect as a feature performance or background sound. The Drum Cafe offers marimba performances, with the option of adding drums, song, dance, saxophone, steel drum or the instrument of your choice. Traditional African songs, original compositions and pop songs can be included in the repertoire. We can create special marimba pieces and custom-make marimba performances to match your event.
We offer a wide range of top-quality South African based marimba groups, including a charming group of 11-13 year olds, Soweto Kidz Marimba Band. The Drum Cafe’s in-house marimba group, Basadi Le Meropa, is in great demand.
Basadi Le Meropa is a group of young South African women, who tell the stories of their lives through marimba, song, drums, dance and the spoken word. Drumming has previously been a male-dominated cultural activity, but the Drum Cafe’s creation of Basadi Le Meropa in 2003 turned this stereotype upside down.
Representing the strength, talent and optimism of African women, Basadi provide a refreshing performance filled with original composition and choreography, colourful costumes, exhilarating drumming, melodic marimbas, upbeat vocals and a wide variety of dances including stick-fighting choreography, Afro-contemporary dance, Pantsula and Township Jive. The show is unique in that it draws upon the individual experiences of the women, who are each performers in their own right. Basadi are also starting to branch out by playing other traditional instruments including the mbira, akadinda, uhadi and kudu horn.
Basadi Le Meropa have toured Netherlands for the Festival Mundial as well as Belgium. The ladies were one of the top feature performances for South African President Thabo Mbeki at the opening of Parliament, and they received a standing ovation at the opening ceremony of the Women’s World Cup Cricket.
The Drum Cafe’s talented gumboot dancers unleash energy and rhythm – to any event. Dressed in coloured overalls, our performers present a powerful performance of stomping, slapping, clapping and singing.
We offer gumboot groups to suit your needs and your budget, and can combine gumboot dancing with other dance forms including Tap-dance, Pantsula, Township Jive and Stepping. The Drum Cafe is renowned for tailor-making and choreographing gumboot sequences. Dances can take place to backing tracks or live music.
For maximum impact as main entertainment, we recommend a combined 15 minute gumboot dancing and drumming performance.
